Update from Mama-land

Wow, I've been away for a long time! For ten years I blogged frequently, and now I'm writing for the first time in six months. Of course it has been one of the biggest years of my life, and I have tons of photos and stories that I could have written about. Instead I've spent lots of time with Daniel, who grows more adorable and fascinating every day. He is now eleven months old, and active, bright, curious, and affectionate.

I'm on extended maternity leave, but I did do a few client shoots this year. I did some family portraits, maternity sessions, and one wedding. But with a baby who rarely slept and a husband with long work hours, I ended up overwhelmed and exhausted. After Labor Day, I stopped doing any photo shoots, and worked only on albums and print orders for existing clients. Nowadays Danny is sleeping through the night and napping regularly, and I feel much better. I finally have a chance to blog once in a while. Hi!

I haven't decided yet when I'd like to return to work, and what kind of work I'll want to do when that time comes. I plan to make some changes to my business structure, because my new life won't accommodate the long hours and frequent travel anymore. I do miss the adventures and creativity of my photography business, though. We'll see what happens. For now, I'm loving my new adventures.

At five months old, he was learning to sit up.

Fourth of July

We spent the summer enjoying Lake Anne, the Reston neighborhood that we are so happy to call home.

Danny's first taste of banana.

We took two beach trips over the summer to Corolla, NC. This was his first time in the ocean. He was scared at first, and then he loved playing the in squishy sand.

Our second trip to Corolla was a family reunion with lots of Danny's little cousins.

Tasting his new toy box/ottoman

In August, Mike and I traveled to Boston to shoot a wedding. We stayed in a hotel on the harbor during the weekend of Hurricane Irene. Here are before/after pictures.

In September and October we went to two UVA football games with my parents. Danny adores his grandparents. He's not so sure about football announcers, though.

We added a pontoon boat to our happy lakeside lifestyle. Those of you who have been following my blog for years will be shocked to know that my niece Kenna is now 8. 8! Her brothers are 6 and 4, and all three are as sweet as can be.

At eight months old, Danny would pull up to standing, and then grin proudly while checking to make sure I was watching.

Danny and me at nine months

Our happy family on the boat. If you look closely, you can see Ally peeking out, too.

Rogue sock

Danny with his grandmother. My mom took many of the wonderful photos I've posted here.

Danny was was a good sport about Halloween, and hammed it up in his costumes for my amusement.

Ten months old

With my dad

Offering a leaf treasure to my mom

Welcome back!!! I, too, just had a baby so I know what it's like to have to adjust to new schedules.

Daniel is getting so big already - can't believe he's coming up to one year old! Fabulous pictures. I bet you have his first year very well documented!!!

HI!!! It's so nice to hear good news about your family! I've been missing your fascinating wedding shots...
Don't worry about starting work ASAP. I had one crying baby and the other one came soon... It took me only 5 years to "adapt to a new schedule" :)))
You look wonderful and I'm sure you'll sort out your business after some time.
Grow big and healthy, as Russians say!!! :))) And don't worry about anything!

Hi! So good to see you again!

Your son is adorable, and I'm noticing a resemblence to your dad in the last few pictures.

Hopefully we don't have to wait another 6 months to see more!

I love the pictures! :o)
You have such a wonderful family.

I got a kick out of the t-shirt "Made in America with British Parts".
It also looks like Danny is in full "All-terrain-baby" mode. I'm sure keeping up with him provides a great aerobic exercise plan for you. :o)

I wondered where your posts had gone!! I've missed your great pictures on here. Glad to hear motherhood is going so well. Can't believe your little man is almost 1 already! Does it seem like the (almost) year has flown?

Yay! I'd been wondering about how you're doing. I'm so glad that you're all doing well!

...and so you got a real boat this time (remember the model boat you blogged about that I thought was a real one?). :D

I've definitely missed seeing your lovely photos. I respect so highly the fact that you're making changes to your life as a photographer, in favor of your life as a mom. I've done the same thing in the past year and I know it can be a difficult transition. There's so much positive feedback in working with clients, and it can be so hard to give that up. It was for me, anyway.

He is such a cutie! It looks like life is treating you well these days - I'm glad to hear you are enjoying your family and new home, even if it doesn't have the same backdrop as the Colorado mountains!

I thought Mike was working with you?

I also have not been on in a very long time (15 months??), but your blog was one I searched for and I enjoyed the updates. Last time I looked you were still in the early stages of pregnancy. Congratulations on a healthy, beautiful boy! Good luck with the transitioning and wishing many happy new memories you will make!
